Listening to the Beat of My Heart
Monday,  April 21, 2014

After a very active weekend, comes Monday.  I managed to make it to the gym this morning.  I did my usual activities: the elliptical trainer, and machines to strengthen my arms and back.  It went well and the time went faster than usual.  I find especially the time on the elliptical trainer is a good time to work on praying for the people on my prayer list.

I hurried home from there and got my shower and got ready to go to work because Ron had a job he needed to leave for a little after 8:30.  Bummer!  So I thought I was in for a slow quiet morning after he left.  Soon after he walked out the door, my brother-in-law, Jim arrived to bring some mail and pick up some other mail.  He brought me a magazine that showed a lot of his bird photos.  He does get some amazing photos.

As he was getting ready to leave a friend who moved away too long ago stopped by for a nice long visit.  It was Coylene Wicks.  She and I used to work together in the church office right after Ron and I moved back to the valley.  I think I talked her ears off, but it was a wonderful visit and I appreciated her taking the time during their stay in the area to stop by for a while.  We talked about everything from hearing problems (her husband really suffers from a lot of hearing loss), to church music, to our boys and grandchildren.  She and I both are mothers of boys only!

Ron came back from his job just a few minutes after Coylene left, so my morning flew by!  I had my lunch and started working some more on invitations for Stephen's graduation.  I hope to finish them this week.

Later in the afternoon, I had a doctor's appointment with a heart specialist.  If you are on Medicare you know that your primary doctor wants to do a yearly physical and although I had an assortment of tests last year getting ready for the surgeries, there were areas that weren't covered like cholesterol, etc.  EKGs were done for the surgeries, but when the doctor ran one this year he said there was a little abnormal thing on it so he referred me to Dr. Cua.  Ron had seen Dr. Cua a week or two ago and really liked him.  I see why.  He is a very nice man.

They did another EKG today and said yes, it showed something.  I told him I knew I had Mitral Valve Prolapse that was diagnosed about 25 years ago.  He looked surprised and said he doubts that diagnosis, or says if I do have it, that it is very mild.  I have always believed it is very mild.  With that condition I had been told to always take antibiotics before dental work or surgery.  He said they stopped that recommendation 2 years ago.  Funny, no one told my dentist.  Anyhow, I am to go back Wednesday for another test and in about 10 days for results.  He wanted to know if I could walk OK for a stress test.  I told him I mow my yard and he laughed and said he guessed I could do it, but he didn't want to do it until after this other test.  I am about to change the theme of this blog to "The Joys of Getting Older." It beats the alternative!

I really did like the doctor.  He is soft spoken though, so I may take Ron with me when I go back for my results.  He is quick to laugh and has a great sense of humor.  His office is well run and busy.  There were not many questions to answer for them which surprised me. They asked about heart problems with my parents, but not grandparents.  My dad did not have heart problems, and my mom recently got a very good report from her heart doctor.  Both of my grandmothers did have heart problems.  So many  medical things I have, I really think came straight from my dad's mother.  It is sometimes scary how many I inherited from her, BUT, she lived a long time.  Out of my four grandparents, 3 of the four lived long lives.  For our kids, it is the same: 3 of the 4 have lived well past the average with both of their grandmothers still living.  We are all blessed by that.

I returned to the shop and cleaned up my desk and shut down the computer.  It was time to come home.  After I ate a quick supper, I worked in the yard awhile, filling ponds and feeders and doing some weeding.  Once I came in, I spotted the little Louisiana Waterthrush out on the waterfall.  He is so active.  When I saw him last week I was worried about him.  He was so jumpy, but today he was much better.  I guess he was just tired from his migration trip.  He didn't even mind it when I opened the window and stuck the camera out.
The Black-bellied Whistling Ducks kept bumping the feeders to get a bite of supper, and to knock food on the ground.  Grrrr.... I needed to get a photo for the photo group I belong to and today's assignment was MOTION.  So I let the ducks get away with their behavior for a while to work on some action shots.

These are my best two shots.  I do wish they would find a field of corn somewhere and leave my bird feed alone.  It was a good day, but I am tired.  Getting up at 5:15 to go to the gym is hard.

    1. I could not remember who you use. We know a good many people who use him and all like him very well. I guess if they didn't, they would go somewhere else.
